Nerja for digital nomads: is it a good option in 2026?
Remote work has moved well beyond a trend — it is now an established way of life. And those with the freedom to choose where they work are increasingly asking themselves the same question: what if I did it from somewhere I actually love? Nerja, on the eastern Costa del Sol, is coming up more and more in that conversation. And for very good reasons.
In this article we look at whether Nerja is a realistic option for digital nomads and remote workers in 2026: the visa, connectivity, cost of living, accommodation and everything you need to know before you pack your laptop.
The Digital Nomad Visa in Spain in 2026: What You Need to Know
Since January 2023, Spain has had a specific visa for international remote workers, approved under what is known as the Start-up Law (Ley de Startups). This authorisation allows non-EU citizens to live and work remotely from Spanish territory on a fully legal basis.
The main requirements updated for 2026 are as follows:
- Minimum income: the equivalent of 200% of the Spanish minimum wage (SMI), set in 2026 at approximately 2,849€ gross per month.
- Qualifications or experience: a university or recognised vocational qualification, or a minimum of three years of demonstrable professional experience.
- Employment link: a contract or professional relationship with a company outside Spain of at least three months, with explicit authorisation to work remotely from Spain.
- Private health insurance: full coverage in Spain, with no co-payments, equivalent to the Spanish public health system.
- Spanish-source income cap: no more than 20% of income may come from Spanish clients or companies.
The residence authorisation, applied for directly from within Spain, has an initial duration of three years and is renewable up to five. The resolution period is 20 working days, with a favourable administrative silence rule (no response = approved).
Key tax advantage: holders can opt for the non-resident tax regime, paying a flat rate of 24% on their income — compared to the standard progressive rate for residents of between 30% and 47%. This benefit applies during the year of relocation and the following five tax years.
EU citizens, for their part, need no visa at all: they can freely reside and work remotely from Spain.
Why Nerja and Not Another Spanish City?
Málaga, Valencia and Las Palmas tend to top the digital nomad destination rankings in Spain. Nerja is different — and that is precisely its value.
If you are looking for a big city with an intense nightlife scene and a large established nomad community, Nerja is not the right fit. But if what you want is genuine quality of life, exceptional climate, nature, authentic food and a human scale that large cities simply cannot offer, Nerja checks every box.
Some of its strongest arguments:
- More than 320 sunny days a year. Nerja's climate is one of the mildest in Europe: gentle winters, summers tempered by sea breezes, and virtually no rain between May and October. You can work with the windows open for nine months of the year.
- Nature five minutes away. The Natural Park of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama surrounds the town. Hiking, climbing, hidden coves and the Chillar river gorge are all within reach of any afternoon off.
- Good food at fair prices. Eating well in Nerja does not require a big budget. The local fish market, weekly produce markets and neighbourhood restaurants offer a quality that would cost twice as much elsewhere.
- No overcrowding. Nerja attracts tourists, yes — but it keeps its scale and its rhythm. You will not find the crowds of Málaga or Marbella in low season, which is precisely when a digital nomad can make the most of it.

Connectivity: Can You Work Properly From Nerja?
This is the first question every digital nomad asks, and in Nerja the answer is a confident yes. Fibre optic coverage is available throughout the town centre and in most of the surrounding urbanisations, with speeds well suited to video calls, cloud-based work and any standard professional digital activity.
For those who prefer a dedicated workspace away from their accommodation, Nerja has Nerja Coworking, a space in the town centre with an open shared area, private rooms for meetings and training sessions, and the infrastructure needed to work professionally.
As a backup, 4G/5G coverage from the main operators (Movistar, Vodafone, Orange) is solid across the entire municipality, making it easy to use a mobile as a hotspot from virtually anywhere if needed.
Cost of Living in Nerja for a Digital Nomad
Nerja is not the cheapest town in Spain, but it offers a quality-to-price ratio well above comparable Costa del Sol destinations such as Marbella or Estepona — and clearly better than Madrid or Barcelona.
A rough monthly estimate for a digital nomad living comfortably in Nerja:
- Accommodation (long-term rental, 1 bedroom): between 700 and 1,100€ per month depending on location and finish.
- Food (market shopping plus occasional restaurants): between 300 and 500€ per month.
- Transport: Nerja is a compact, walkable town. A car or scooter is useful for exploring the region but not essential for daily life.
- Leisure, sport and extras: between 150 and 300€ per month.
- Estimated total: between 1,300 and 2,000€ per month for a comfortable lifestyle without excess.
This budget sits comfortably within the profile of someone who meets the digital nomad visa requirements (minimum income of 2,849€/month), leaving a reasonable margin for savings.

The Digital Nomad Profile That Fits Nerja Best
Nerja is not for everyone — and that is a good thing. The remote workers who get the most out of Nerja tend to share a similar profile:
- They value quality of life over nightlife and urban energy.
- They enjoy nature, hiking, the sea and authentic local food.
- They want a calm environment to focus during working hours and truly switch off in the afternoon.
- They are looking for an integrated international community, not a nomad bubble disconnected from local life.
- They are open to staying longer than originally planned. Because Nerja has a habit of making that happen.
